Our Methodology
Where the data comes from
- Laws and regulations: the text on the federal Justice Laws website, the Canada Gazette and the official legislation sites of provinces and territories.
- Government guidance: Health Canada, the Canada Revenue Agency, the Canada Border Services Agency, Statistics Canada and provincial ministries.
- City rules: the bylaw text or the city’s own page for each rule in the rules database, with the bylaw number where one exists.
How we record a fact
Each fact has an identifier, a plain-English statement, the source address, the date we read it and a short supporting quote. If two official sources disagree, we record the conflict and do not publish a number until it is resolved.
What “verified” means
A fact is verified when we read it on the cited page on the date shown. Verification does not mean the rule applies to your personal situation. A fact we could not read is marked unverified and is not shown as settled.
Prices and calculations
Calculators use only the numbers you enter. Where a page shows tax rates, they come from the official tax page cited next to the table. We do not publish retail prices without an official or clearly documented source.
Review cycle
Prices, taxes, ages, fines and city rules are reviewed every quarter. Other guides are reviewed every six months, and historical pages once a year. The review date and the next review date are shown at the top of each page.
Naming policy
We name laws, courts, regulators and official government programs. We do not name companies or their brands, advocacy groups or think tanks, so that no page can be read as promoting or attacking any of them.
Errors
See the editorial policy for how we handle corrections, and the contact page to report a problem.
