Only rules confirmed on an official page are listed. Cities not shown here, or topics not listed for a city, have not been confirmed yet — check the city's own bylaw page. Download the table (CSV).

Using the results

Pick a city, or search for a word like “playground” or “patio”. Each row gives the rule, the bylaw it comes from, a link to the official page and the date we checked it. A distance is measured from the places the rule names, not from every building.

Coverage and gaps

The database covers four cities so far. We tried ten. For Ottawa, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Halifax and Montreal the official city pages did not load on the review date, and for Regina we could confirm only the bylaw number and a link to the city’s Smoking Bylaw page. We do not publish figures from search summaries or news reports, so those cities stay blank until we have read an official page.

Check the bylaw yourself

Bylaws are amended often. Before you rely on a distance or a fine, open the official page linked in the row. If you find a rule that has changed, tell us on the contact page.

Frequently asked questions

Which cities are in the database?

Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and Saskatoon have confirmed entries. Ottawa, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Halifax, Montreal and Regina were checked but are not listed because the official city pages could not be read on the review date.

Why are some topics missing for a city?

We only list a rule we have read in an official source. If a topic is missing, the city may not have a separate rule, or we have not confirmed it yet.

Does the database cover cannabis?

Not at this time. The database covers tobacco and vaping.
