Key takeaways

Yukon's minimum age to buy or use tobacco and vaping products is 19. The Tobacco and Vaping Products Control and Regulation Act, tabled as Bill 3 in October 2019 and in force in 2020, replaced the 2008 Smoke-Free Places Act and treats vaping like tobacco. Yukon's main legislation and tax pages blocked automated access, so several details are listed as unconfirmed.

As of 27 October 2026, Yukon’s minimum age to buy or use tobacco and vaping products is 19, set by the Tobacco and Vaping Products Control and Regulation Act. The Act came into force in 2020 and replaced the Smoke-Free Places Act. Several Yukon government pages, including its legislation and tax pages, returned errors to automated requests, so this page is short on purpose.

Nineteen, for both tobacco and vaping products. Before the new Act it was 18: the government tabled Bill No. 3 on 7 October 2019 to raise the age from 18 to 19, and it described the bill as directing how vapour products must be sold, used and promoted. Nineteen matches the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, and British Columbia. See the legal smoking age across Canada.

Which laws apply?

The Tobacco and Vaping Products Control and Regulation Act regulates the use, sale, display and promotion of tobacco and vaping products. It replaced the Smoke-Free Places Act, which took effect in 2008. By 2019 the government said that older law had not been updated since 2009 and opened consultation on how vapour products should be sold, used and promoted and on the legal age.

Does Yukon treat vaping like smoking?

Mostly. According to the 2020 release announcing the Act, vaping restrictions are similar to those already in place for tobacco, and signs must read “no vaping” as well as “no smoking.” Signs in smoke-free places therefore name both. For a Canada-wide picture, see vaping laws in Canada.

What about vaping tax?

Yukon is one of the specified provinces and territories in the federal coordinated vaping duty system, which means an additional vaping duty applies to vaping products there on top of the federal duty. The Canada Revenue Agency lists Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, Alberta, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Where can you get help to quit?

We could not read Yukon’s quit-smoking page, which Health Canada links to from its list of provincial and territorial services. Health Canada’s national toll-free line, 1-866-366-3667, connects to a quit coach in any province or territory. See free quit-smoking help by province.

How does Yukon differ from its neighbours?

Yukon’s age of 19 matches the Northwest Territories and British Columbia. Beyond the age and the no-vaping signs, we cannot yet compare distances, patios or vehicle rules, because the Yukon pages that state them did not open.

What we could not confirm

  • Where smoking and vaping are banned, including patios, playgrounds and distances from doorways.
  • The age limit for the vehicle rule and any fines.
  • Flavour restrictions and retail display rules in detail.
  • The tobacco tax per carton; the official rates page returned an error.
  • Quit-line numbers and free nicotine replacement.
