A Win-Win: Enhancing Public Health and Public Revenue
In January 2004, the Canadian Coalition for Action on Tobacco released a report, A Win-Win: Enhancing Public Health and Public Revenue , calling on the federal government to close the long-standing loophole which sees roll-your-own tobacco taxed at a far lower rate than a comparable quantity of cigarettes. The report also recommended a $5 per carton increase in the tax on cigarettes and a series of other measures.
The document includes extensive data tables on cigarette tax and price issues, including:
- real and nominal price of cigarettes since 1949
- detailed breakdown of provincial and federal taxes
- comparisons with other countries
Please note the document is in PDF format, and measures about 1.5 Mb.
